KUCHING, September 30: For those looking to enjoy healthy, plant-based meals without breaking the bank, the Gandhara Vegetarian Restaurant at the Kuching Buddhist Society (KBS) offers a delightful solution. This community-based eatery, nestled in Iris Garden along Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho, has become a hidden gem for locals and visitors alike.
Despite the abundance of food stalls in Kuching, vegetarian options are often limited, making Gandhara a standout. Serving affordable, wholesome dishes that cater to local palates, the restaurant is a haven for those who prefer vegetarian fare or are simply curious about plant-based dining.
KBS President Chua Beng Thian shared that Gandhara was established nine years ago with a mission to extend KBS’s cultural and community outreach. “Our goal is not just to serve Buddhists but to bring people from all walks of life together through delicious, affordable vegetarian meals,” said Chua.
The restaurant, operating on a not-for-profit basis, offers over 50 vegetarian dishes, all priced between RM5 to RM6. Highlights include vegetarian versions of the iconic Sarawak laksa and kolo mee, with the laksa featuring a lighter broth made without meat or seafood, and a mushroom-based paste instead of prawn belacan.
For just RM5, diners can enjoy a plate of rice with three side dishes, with favourites like vegetarian curry served daily. Finger foods such as yam pastries (RM5) and beverages like coffee or tea (RM1.50) add to the menu’s variety.
Chua emphasised the eatery’s role in promoting harmony in Sarawak. “We’re proud to serve a diverse crowd, including locals and foreigners. KBS is committed to fostering unity in Sarawak, and this restaurant is just one way we contribute to our multi-racial community.”
Gandhara operates daily from 7 am to 4.30 pm. For more information, call 028-428 689.
