KUCHING (Dec 23): Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang has called on Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman and Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen to advocate for more police resources in Sarawak.
Speaking at the Program Bandar Selamat (Safety Dialogue) at Kampung Haji Baki today, Lo highlighted the critical need for additional police personnel and assets to enhance public safety in Sarawak.
He pointed out that the lack of police resources has significantly hampered the Padawan District Police Headquarters (IPD Padawan) and other areas in managing security challenges effectively.
“For IPD Padawan, police personnel must patrol extensive areas from Padawan to Telaga Air. This makes it essential for the Stampin MP to bring up the issue in Parliament,” Lo stated.
Federal Responsibility
Lo emphasized that security is under federal jurisdiction, making it crucial for the federal government to address these shortages. He urged Chong to push for more police personnel, patrol cars, and closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) for both the Batu Kitang state constituency and the Stampin parliamentary constituency.
“With sufficient resources, we can significantly reduce crime rates in these areas,” he added.
Community Safety Programme
The Safety Dialogue featured discussions on crime prevention and safety between the police, Padawan District Council (MPP), and the local community. Lo praised the collaboration between MPP and the police, urging MPP to continue initiatives that promote public safety, such as clearing overgrown vegetation that could be used as hiding spots by criminals.
He also cautioned the public against online scams, which have become increasingly prevalent, resulting in property fraud and other crimes.
“Always exercise caution when using social media and never share personal information to avoid falling victim to scams,” Lo advised.
The event was attended by MPP chairman Tan Kai and Padawan district police chief Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi.
