KUCHING (Nov 13): Perak FC footballer Tommy Mawat Bada, originally from Belaga, has boldly responded to racial insults targeted at him on social media following an on-field altercation with Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) player Arif Aiman Hanapi.
The incident, which occurred during a heated match last Sunday, led to criticism of Tommy on social media, where some commenters resorted to racial slurs. Unfazed, the 29-year-old took to Instagram to firmly address the matter, expressing pride in his Dayak heritage.
“Everyone has the freedom to speak up. You’re free to express anger, give feedback, or even criticise – no problem. We’re all just human beings, sharing the same Earth,” Tommy wrote. While he welcomed constructive criticism, he was clear that racial comments are unacceptable. “Even if you’re upset, avoid mentioning anything about family or race (Dayak). Yes, I was born as a Dayak in my blood. I’m still proud of it until today.”
Tommy’s message was a reminder that racism has no place in sports, especially in a diverse nation like Malaysia. He also cautioned those who resort to such behaviour online, saying, “Brothers and sisters, please don’t bring up racial issues… What if other Dayakians saw and read your comments? Can you handle them?”
To his critics, Tommy ended his post with a plea for unity: “God bless you and thank you. Do not spread hate among football.”
The altercation between Tommy and Arif Aiman led to both players receiving yellow cards, a decision made by referee Razlan Joffri Ali. However, there was public debate, with some, including Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, opining that both players should have faced red cards instead.
The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has since stated that they will investigate the incident. Tommy’s contract with Perak FC runs until May 2025, following his transfer in December last year. Throughout his career, he has played for notable teams including Negeri Sembilan FC, Sabah, Sarawak United, and Kuching City, and was also called up to Malaysia’s under-23 team for the 2018 Asian Games.
