LAWAS: A fire ravaged through Kampung Pemukat on Sunday, leaving 73 residents displaced and causing significant property damage. The blaze destroyed five homes, completely leveling them in a tragic event that has left the community reeling.
Swift Response from Fire and Rescue Teams
According to Azman Ibrahim, Chief of the Lawas Fire and Rescue Station (BBP), the emergency response was prompt but the fire was relentless. “The fire was fully controlled at 7.07pm and the extinguishing operation ended at 9.45pm,” he reported.
The BBP Lawas team was dispatched immediately upon receiving an emergency call at 5.47pm. The location of the fire, 43 kilometers from the station, posed a significant challenge. However, the team, with assistance from BBP Sipitang, Sabah, managed to contain the blaze.
Efforts to Contain the Blaze
The fire destroyed five houses, leaving a path of devastation in its wake. The firefighting efforts were strategically managed to prevent further spread. “Members put out the fire in the upstream area to prevent the spread of the fire in addition to putting out the fire in the downstream area,” said Chief Azman.
The operation saw the collaboration of multiple agencies. The Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS) of Kampung Pemukat, PBS Kampung Punang, and STOLport Lawas joined forces with BBP Lawas and BBP Sipitang, showcasing the community’s resilience and solidarity in the face of disaster.

Among the affected residents was a 73-year-old man who sustained burns to his hand. Fortunately, there were no other reported injuries or fatalities. The swift and coordinated response likely prevented further casualties and property damage.
