LAWAS: A fire ravaged through Kampung Pemukat on Sunday, leaving 73 residents displaced and causing significant property damage. The blaze destroyed five homes, completely leveling them in a tragic event that has left the community reeling.

Swift Response from Fire and Rescue Teams

According to Azman Ibrahim, Chief of the Lawas Fire and Rescue Station (BBP), the emergency response was prompt but the fire was relentless. “The fire was fully controlled at 7.07pm and the extinguishing operation ended at 9.45pm,” he reported.

The BBP Lawas team was dispatched immediately upon receiving an emergency call at 5.47pm. The location of the fire, 43 kilometers from the station, posed a significant challenge. However, the team, with assistance from BBP Sipitang, Sabah, managed to contain the blaze.

Efforts to Contain the Blaze

The fire destroyed five houses, leaving a path of devastation in its wake. The firefighting efforts were strategically managed to prevent further spread. “Members put out the fire in the upstream area to prevent the spread of the fire in addition to putting out the fire in the downstream area,” said Chief Azman.

The operation saw the collaboration of multiple agencies. The Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS) of Kampung Pemukat, PBS Kampung Punang, and STOLport Lawas joined forces with BBP Lawas and BBP Sipitang, showcasing the community’s resilience and solidarity in the face of disaster.

Injuries and Casualties

Among the affected residents was a 73-year-old man who sustained burns to his hand. Fortunately, there were no other reported injuries or fatalities. The swift and coordinated response likely prevented further casualties and property damage.

Community Support and Assistance

The affected residents are currently receiving support from local authorities and community groups. Immediate relief efforts are focused on providing temporary shelter, food, and medical care to those displaced by the fire.

Community leaders and local government officials have pledged their support to help the residents rebuild their lives and homes. Donations and aid are being mobilized to assist in the recovery process.

Investigation and Future Prevention

The total loss and the cause of the fire are still under investigation. Authorities are working diligently to determine the fire’s origin and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Fire safety awareness and preventive measures will likely become a focal point in the community moving forward.

The Road Ahead

As Kampung Pemukat begins the arduous task of recovery, the spirit of community and resilience shines through. The collaborative efforts of the fire and rescue teams, along with the support from neighboring areas, highlight the strength and unity of the residents.

While the physical damage is extensive, the shared determination to rebuild and support one another offers a beacon of hope. The community’s response to this tragedy underscores the importance of solidarity in times of crisis.
