KUCHING: As Chinese New Year approaches, the community is being reminded to prioritize fire safety and prevention to avoid potential emergencies during the festive season.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian has stressed the importance of equipping oneself with fire safety knowledge, emphasizing that many fire or accident cases during festive periods are preventable with proper awareness and preparation.

“Fire safety is a matter of mindset,” he said. “Your life or your house depends on having this basic knowledge. Take the time to undergo fire safety training, understand the dangers of the 3Ls – ‘lupa, lalai, leka’ (forgetfulness, negligence, and carelessness) – and learn what to do when a fire occurs.”

Dr. Sim expressed gratitude to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) for organizing awareness campaigns, particularly for young children in kindergartens. He highlighted the role of children in spreading safety awareness to their families.

The Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government also urged the public to identify fire hydrant locations in their areas and ensure they are in good condition.

“If a fire hydrant is damaged or leaking, report it to Bomba immediately,” he said. “Better still, adopt a fire hydrant and become your community’s guardian of fire safety.”

Dr. Sim hopes to see fewer fire incidents during this festive period, allowing the community to celebrate safely and joyfully.

Sarawak Bomba director Jamri Masran echoed these sentiments, urging businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and malls – common festive hotspots – to enhance fire safety measures.

“Premises owners should stay vigilant and take proactive steps to reduce fire hazards,” Jamri said.

The event, held at Wisma Wan, Tabuan Jaya, also saw the participation of Sarawak Bomba deputy director Tiong Ling Hii, Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, and other prominent figures.
