KUCHING: The streets of Kuching came alive with vibrant colours, rhythmic beats, and a grand cultural display as thousands gathered to celebrate the Seng Ong deity’s birthday. The spectacular event featured an impressive procession of 222 troupes, filling the air with the sounds of Chinese drums, Malay kompang, and gendang.

Wayang Street and its surrounding areas were transformed into a lively carnival as cultural groups, including the Gabungan Orang Asal Sabah Sarawak (GOASS), performed in full splendour. The celebration’s highlights included two breathtaking dragons – a 280-foot fire dragon and an extraordinary 500-foot green dragon, specially imported from Vietnam.

A Boost for Tourism

Kuching Hokkien Association (KHA) president Datuk Richard Wee expressed hopes that the event would gain greater recognition as part of Sarawak’s tourism calendar.

“We have spoken to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, and we hope this can be a major tourism attraction,” he said.

Wee further highlighted that the festival had already attracted attention beyond Sarawak, with participants from Sabah joining the grand procession.

“I hope it can evolve into a more internationally recognised event,” he added.

A Procession to Remember

Organised by KHA Hong San Si Temple, the annual procession began at 3.30 pm, with the momentous release of the Seng Ong deity’s statue taking place at 6.30 pm.

As early as 2 pm, eager devotees and spectators filled the streets, anticipating the vibrant parade. The procession route covered several key locations, including Jalan Tabuan, Jalan Ban Hock, Jalan Padungan, Jalan Bukit Mata, Main Bazaar, Jalan Gambier, Market Street, Khoo Hun Yeang Street, Jalan Tun Haji Openg, Carpenter Street, and Ewe Hai Street before making its way back to Wayang Street.

Ongoing Festivities Until March 28

Beyond the main event, celebrations continue at the drama stage opposite the century-old temple. Visitors can enjoy thrilling lion and dragon dance performances, traditional singing, and cultural dances until March 28. A special Chinese opera performance will also be held until March 23.

From March 24 to 28, cultural performances will take centre stage, featuring talented groups such as Anak Sarawak Performing Arts (ASPA), Sri Ruthra Kaliamman Urumi Melam, and GOASS.

The Seng Ong deity’s birthday celebration is a testament to Kuching’s rich cultural heritage, bringing together diverse communities in a grand display of unity and tradition.
