A Night to Remember at Kuching Zumba Fiesta
KUCHING: The 6th edition of Kuching Zumba Fiesta 2024 lit up the Jubilee Ground with colorful lights and loud music as over 3,000 participants danced the night away on August 4. The event, a highlight of the Kuching Festival, attracted fitness enthusiasts from all walks of life, transforming a rainy evening into a vibrant celebration of health and community.
Dr. Sim Kui Hian’s Insightful Post
Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak Deputy Premier, Minister of Public Health, Housing & Local Gov Sarawak, a prominent figure, shared his enthusiasm for the event on social media, stating:
“Despite the rain, the #Zumba enthusiasts still come together for the largest gathering of Zumba 💃🕺 event @ Kuching Festival. Truly playing their role and doing their part for Kuching Festival, to highlight Kuching Fes is beyond just food 🍱.
In Sarawak, with the rapid progress in the last few decades, the new normal (majority) is overweight/obesity be it young or old. Normal weight is now minority (hence the abnormal)🤣.
Physical exercise is not only good for weight reduction but also reduction in BP, Cholesterol, and blood sugar. But Zumba is not just a physical exercise but a social exercise, community gathering, and nation building together.
Heartiest congratulations to the 48 instructors, the Zumba enthusiasts, the organizing committee of MBKS, and the generous sponsors for this event again. Let’s Zumba and after that, let’s go to enjoy the food @ Kuching Fes (just a few steps away).”
MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng on the Zumba Fiesta
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng highlighted the significance of the event during the Kuching Festival. “Everyone knows Kuching Zumba Fiesta is a very famous event,” he said. “We have been planning to make a comeback this year. I believe that we need to start organizing more physical activities after the pandemic.”
Wee explained that the council had to postpone the Kuching Zumba Fiesta in 2020, but the return of the event this year has been eagerly awaited by Kuching residents. He emphasized that the Zumba activity is part of the council’s efforts to promote a healthier lifestyle within the community.
The Role of Zumba in Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle
Wee elaborated on the council’s Healthy City programme, which has been a cornerstone of MBKS’s initiatives over the years. “The community, regardless of age, gender, or race, is welcomed to join in the electrifying and fun-filled night where high-spirited instructors, accompanied by immense music bursts, will guide you to dance through the night, making it an unforgettable experience,” he stated.
Wee, who participated enthusiastically, remarked that Zumba transcends a typical workout. “Zumba isn’t even a workout; it’s a fun dance party for all the participants, with exercise being one of the biggest perks. The music is fast, upbeat, and contagious, so you can’t help but keep moving. Zumba is by far one of the best ways to get your friends in on your exercise routine, and at the same time, you can stay connected with your friends and family.”
A Community Event for All Ages
The Kuching Zumba Fiesta 2024 was not just an event but a social gathering that brought the community together. The presence of various local figures, including Kapitan Tan Kun Gee and Kuching Zumba Fiesta 2024 organizing committee chairperson and Kuching Festival chairman, added to the event’s success.
The event demonstrated the power of community in promoting health and well-being. It underscored the importance of physical activity and social interaction in building a healthier, more connected society.
