KUCHING, Dec 31: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has announced plans to launch the ‘Love Your Markets’ Campaign in 2025. This initiative is set to align with Kuching’s status as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, aiming to elevate the role of local markets and hawker centres in preserving Sarawak’s unique culinary identity.
Empowering Local Markets
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng shared that the campaign’s primary objective is to encourage community support for markets and hawker centres, which serve as the heart of Sarawak’s rich food culture.
“To make our markets more attractive and vibrant, we will upgrade them in phases. This ensures they continue to be dynamic hubs for community interactions and culinary experiences,” said Wee in his New Year 2025 address.
Wee also highlighted that these upgrades align with the upcoming gastronomy centre, currently under construction and set to open in 2027. The centre aims to bolster Sarawak’s reputation as a global food destination.
Green Initiative for Public Parks
The mayor also emphasised MBKS’s commitment to enhancing public spaces. Hui Sing Recreation Park is undergoing significant improvements, including better walking paths, expanded play areas, and more shaded spots for families.
“These upgrades will feature increased greenery and eco-friendly designs, promoting sustainability while making parks more enjoyable for people of all ages,” said Wee.
Advancing Kuching as a Smart City
Kuching South is also embracing innovation, moving towards becoming a Smart City. MBKS is gradually implementing e-submissions for building plans, tenders, and licensing to improve transparency and efficiency for both businesses and residents.
Mayor Wee expressed optimism about 2025, stating these efforts aim to foster inclusivity, sustainability, and progress for all residents of Kuching South.
