Sarawak Districts Brace for Sweltering Heat: Level 1 Alert Issued

MetMalaysia’s latest update highlights that the districts of Limbang, Telang Usan, and Marudi are currently experiencing extremely hot weather, with temperatures recorded above 35°C, reaching up to 37°C as of 4 pm today. This situation has raised concerns among residents, particularly for those in areas directly affected by the escalating temperatures.

What Does Level 1 Alert Mean for Sarawak?

Understanding MetMalaysia’s Heat Alert Levels

MetMalaysia defines its heat alert system into three levels:

  • Level 1 (Alert): This is issued when the maximum daily temperature reaches between 35°C and 37°C for at least three consecutive days.
  • Level 2 (Heat Wave): Activated when the daily maximum temperature exceeds 37°C up to 40°C for three or more consecutive days.
  • Level 3 (Extreme Heat Wave): This highest alert is triggered when temperatures hit 40°C or higher for three consecutive days.

Currently, Limbang and Miri fall under the Level 1 Alert, signifying an ongoing risk of prolonged heat exposure. Residents in these areas are advised to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

Mixed Weather Conditions Across Sarawak

While Limbang and Miri grapple with high temperatures, other parts of Sarawak, including Kuching, are experiencing relatively milder conditions with temperatures reaching up to 34°C. Despite the heat, Kuching and several other districts have seen intermittent downpours and thunderstorms, providing some temporary relief from the sweltering heat.

However, these thunderstorms have also caused minor disruptions, including flash floods in low-lying areas. MetMalaysia continues to monitor weather patterns and advises residents to stay updated through their official channels.

Rainfall Predictions: Average Levels Expected Across Sarawak

On August 22, MetMalaysia reported that all divisions in Sarawak would experience average rainfall levels, ranging from 150mm to 350mm. While rain showers are expected, they may not be sufficient to significantly lower the temperatures in areas currently under heat alert.

A Look Ahead: What’s Next for Sarawak’s Weather?

As Sarawak enters a period of heightened temperatures, residents in affected areas like Limbang and Miri should remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines provided by MetMalaysia. With the possibility of prolonged heat, taking preventive measures will be crucial in minimizing the health impacts of this weather condition.
