KUCHING: The first edition of the Battle of the Barbell 2024 Kuching Open witnessed a remarkable display of power and skill as experienced weightlifters and newcomers converged on May 18 at the CFK Training Ground. Organized by the Kuching Weightlifting Association (KWA), this event marked a significant moment for the weightlifting community in Sarawak.

A Platform for Preparation and Progress

With the upcoming SUKMA 2024 event set to take place in Sarawak, the Battle of the Barbell 2024 Kuching Open served as a crucial preparation platform for weightlifting athletes. The competition was fierce, highlighting the immense talent present in the sport. The KWA emphasized the importance of this event in a press statement, noting the vital role it played in preparing athletes for larger competitions.

KWA president Carter Wei expressed his delight with the turnout and enthusiasm surrounding the event. Wei also acknowledged the collaboration of various organizations that made the event possible, including the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP), the national Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), Sarawak Weightlifting Association (SWA), and KWA.

Wei noted that the event showcased not only athletic prowess but also boosted health and fitness tourism in Sarawak. By positioning Sarawak as a destination for wellness enthusiasts, the Battle of the Barbell 2024 Kuching Open has the potential to enhance tourism while encouraging youth involvement in weightlifting. Winners of the Battle of the Barbell 2024 Kuching Open

A total of four categories were contested, with the following athletes emerging victorious:

  • Elite Women: Marthina Chan
  • Open Women: Charlene Bong
  • Elite Men: Felix Tujang
  • Open Men: Tay Kian Pei

These winners demonstrated exceptional strength and dedication, setting a high standard for future competitions.
