Premier Calls on Sarawakians to Unite for a Brighter Future with New Economy
KUCHING (Aug 30): Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has urged Sarawakians to stay united in moving forward towards building a brighter future through the implementation of the state’s new economy. He emphasized the commitment of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government to generating a sustainable economy based on advanced technology and renewable resources.
Sarawak’s Vision for a Sustainable Future
Digital Economy, Hydrogen Economy, and Beyond
Since 2017, Sarawak has taken significant strides towards developing a robust digital economy, followed by the establishment of a hydrogen economy, and the continuous development of sustainable resources and clean energy. These efforts are part of a larger strategy to position Sarawak as a leader in green technology and new economic sectors.
“Sarawak is now beginning to explore initiatives to develop the compound chip and aerospace industries in addition to efforts towards downstream resources of oil and gas,” Abang Johari stated during his National Day message.
Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030
The Premier highlighted that after the Covid-19 pandemic, the GPS government adopted bold and proactive measures through the implementation of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. This strategy is designed to drive Sarawak towards becoming a high-income developed region by 2030, focusing on economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.
Three Pillars of PCDS 2030
- Economic Prosperity: Emphasizing new economic sectors such as digital technology, clean energy, and sustainable industries, positioning Sarawak as a model state for economic transformation.
- Social Inclusion: Promoting inclusivity and equitable growth, ensuring that all Sarawakians benefit from economic advancements.
- Environmental Sustainability: Pioneering the use of green technology and renewable resources to minimize environmental impact, particularly in combating climate change.
“Sarawak continues to lead new branches of the economy and become an example for other states in the country and abroad to emulate,” said Abang Johari.
Sarawak’s Journey to Independence and Beyond
A History of Unity and Resilience
Abang Johari touched on the historical journey of Sarawak, recalling the state’s independence from British rule on July 22, 1963, and its integration into Malaysia 61 years ago. He reflected on Sarawak’s resilience and continuous efforts to remain competitive in various fields, driving the state’s transformation into an economic powerhouse.
“Throughout the 61 years of being part of Malaysia, Sarawak continues to step forward and remain competitive in various fields to strengthen and further transform Sarawak’s economy,” he noted.
A United Malaysia, A United Sarawak
The Premier highlighted Malaysia’s unity, referring to it as a “big family” that respects the diverse cultural and religious backgrounds of its people. He reminisced about the spirit of unity shown in 1957 when Malays, Indians, and Chinese came together to demand independence from British rule. Similarly, in Sarawak, the Dayaks, Chinese, and Malays united to achieve independence from British governance.
“Given this, I call upon the people of Sarawak to continue moving together to build a brighter future for our state as well as for Malaysia,” he said.
Sarawak’s Future: A Call to Action
Building a Brighter Future Together
Abang Johari concluded his message with a call to action, urging all Sarawakians to uphold the spirit of ‘Segulai, Sejalai’ (Together, Aligned) to work towards a prosperous and sustainable future. He expressed confidence that Sarawak, together with Malaysia, will continue to progress and be respected by the global community.
“With the spirit of ‘Segulai, Sejalai’, I am confident that Sarawak and Malaysia will continue to move forward as a region that is respected by the world community,” he added.
