The Remarkable Recovery of Humpback Numbers
Since 1986, when commercial whaling was largely banned, humpback whale numbers have experienced a remarkable resurgence. From just a few hundred, their population has soared to more than 35,000. However, with this resurgence comes new challenges, especially as humpbacks find themselves in the crosshairs of specialized hunters.
Orca Predation: A Growing Concern
In recent times, some orcas have specialized in hunting humpback whales. A small pod, comprising just three orcas, recently pursued a humpback calf. However, what made this encounter particularly notable was the presence of a 40-ton male humpback accompanying the calf.
A Battle for Survival
Facing the formidable challenge posed by the male humpback, the orcas did not give up easily. Despite the odds stacked against them, they persisted in their pursuit. The male humpback, perhaps believing that the orcas had retreated, dove underwater.
Seizing the Opportunity
Seizing their moment, the orcas made a bold move. They kidnapped the humpback calf, mimicking the behavior of its mother. By placing the calf on their backs and carrying it along in their slipstream, they exploited its young and naive nature, leading it away willingly.

As incidents of orca predation on humpback whales become more frequent, conservationists and marine biologists are increasingly concerned about the long-term impact on humpback populations. Efforts to protect these majestic creatures must be intensified to ensure their continued survival in the face of evolving threats.
