KUCHING, Nov 20: The Sarawak government has announced that all Sarawakian students enrolled in higher learning institutions across Malaysia are eligible to receive RM1,200 annually in ‘pocket money,’ regardless of their family income.

The announcement was made today by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly. This financial aid reflects the government’s commitment to supporting students in their academic journey without the burden of financial constraints.

Initially, during the Lan Berambeh 2024 event in Kuala Lumpur on October 19, the Premier introduced the assistance plan. It was initially reserved for students from low-income households with a per capita income of RM1,500 and below, as outlined in the Sarawak Budget 2025 speech on November 11.

However, feedback from elected representatives highlighted concerns about the eligibility criteria. Addressing these concerns, Abang Johari revised the policy to extend the aid to all Sarawakian students in higher learning institutions, regardless of their family’s financial background.

“We understand that our students are the backbone of Sarawak’s future. Upon graduation, they will play pivotal roles in advancing our State. It’s important for them to focus entirely on their studies without financial worries,” Abang Johari stated.

The initiative underscores the Sarawak government’s dedication to nurturing young talent under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) administration. By ensuring students can afford essential needs like food and transportation, the government aims to create a conducive environment for academic success and personal development.

Sarawakian students and their families have welcomed this move as a step toward fostering an inclusive and supportive educational framework in the State.
