KUCHING, Feb 2: Sarawak Energy is actively managing power disruptions caused by continuous heavy rain and floods across the state. The company remains on high alert to ensure power restoration is carried out swiftly and safely while prioritising public safety.

In a press statement today, Sarawak Energy announced that several substations in flood-affected areas have been proactively shut down due to rising water levels and landslides. This precautionary measure is necessary to prevent electrical hazards and ensure the safety of residents.

Challenges in Restoration Efforts

Technical teams have been deployed to the affected areas, with additional personnel on 24-hour standby for immediate response. However, restoration efforts remain challenging due to continuous heavy rainfall, dangerous conditions, and difficult access to certain sites.

Despite these challenges, Sarawak Energy assured the public that all power generation plants, including the Bakun, Murum, and Batang Ai hydroelectric stations, remain operational with stable reservoir levels.

Public Safety Advisory

As the floods persist, Sarawak Energy urges the public to stay vigilant and adhere to safety measures to prevent electrical accidents. Residents should take the following precautions:

  • Turn off the home electricity supply at the main switchboard at the earliest sign of rising floodwaters.
  • Move electrical appliances to higher ground to prevent damage and reduce risks of electrocution.
  • Stay clear of fallen power lines, as these may still be live and pose a serious hazard.
  • If traveling by boat in flooded areas, be mindful of power lines that may be dangerously close to the water surface.

Post-Flood Safety Measures

Once floodwaters subside, Sarawak Energy advises residents to:

  • Stay away from fallen electrical wires, as they may still be live.
  • Refrain from using electrical appliances that have been submerged in floodwaters, as they may cause electrocution or fire.
  • Engage a certified electrician to inspect home wiring before turning on the electricity supply.

Sarawak Energy reminded the public that its technical support team is available 24/7 for assistance. Reports of power-related issues can be made via the Sarawak Energy customer care hotline at 1300 88 3111 or through the SEB Cares mobile app.

With continuous rainfall and flooding expected to persist in some areas, Sarawak Energy urges the public to prioritise safety and remain cautious around electrical infrastructure.
