Sarawak Eyes Boeing Japan Collaboration for Sustainable Aviation Growth

KUCHING (Dec 17) – Sarawak is setting its sights on a strategic partnership with Boeing Japan to advance its aviation industry and develop Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that the collaboration aligns with the state’s ambition to establish its own airline while prioritizing sustainability.

Speaking after a meeting with Boeing Japan president Eric G John at the company’s headquarters, Abang Johari highlighted that the discussions were preliminary but promising.

“Boeing presented several proposals. They act as a hub for monitoring aviation developments involving Boeing aircraft across Southeast Asia. We are exploring opportunities for collaboration to support Sarawak’s vision of having its own airline,” he said.

Focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Abang Johari underscored Sarawak’s commitment to SAF as a cleaner alternative for the aviation industry. The state is already collaborating with the Chitose Group and Eneos Corporation on SAF production and hydrogen research.

“These initiatives not only pave the way for sustainable energy use but also align with global efforts to combat climate change,” he added.

Boeing’s Commitment to Sarawak

Boeing Japan’s Eric G John expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, commending Sarawak’s proactive approach to sustainable aviation.

“We are thrilled to meet Premier Abang Johari and hear his vision for the future of aviation in Malaysia. Boeing is committed to supporting Sarawak’s sustainable aviation and SAF goals,” John said.

John also highlighted potential opportunities for Boeing’s growth in Sarawak, emphasizing a mutual commitment to advancing sustainable aviation technologies.

Promising Future for Sarawak’s Aviation

The delegation accompanying the Premier included Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Minister for Utilities and Telecommunications Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, and other key officials.

With Sarawak exploring these opportunities, the partnership with Boeing Japan could mark a significant milestone in achieving both economic growth and environmental sustainability in the aviation sector.
