KUCHING – The Sarawak Regatta 2024 wrapped up with a spectacular and action-packed finale at the Kuching Waterfront, bringing together thousands of enthusiastic spectators and esteemed dignitaries to witness an electrifying end to this historic annual event. With a tradition spanning centuries, the regatta has once again showcased Sarawak’s cultural vibrancy and the enduring unity among its people.
As the afternoon breeze swept over the Sarawak River, the bustling Kuching Waterfront transformed into a hub of excitement. Despite an afternoon rain, cheers resonated from the riverbank as teams navigated the water with speed and precision, making for an unforgettable sight. The highlight of the day was the fiercely competitive ‘Raja Sungai’ (King of the River) category, where elite teams paddled in unison, their oars slicing through the water in a display of skill, strength, and endurance.
This year’s regatta was graced by the presence of Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, underscoring the deep-rooted relationship between Sarawak and Brunei. Also present were Sarawak’s Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, whose attendance added significance to the occasion. The crowd welcomed the dignitaries with heartfelt applause, celebrating not just the event but also the cultural legacy it represents.
The much-anticipated Raja Sungai category saw Yayasan Sarawak’s Puteri Dang Balai emerge victorious, claiming the coveted title for the third consecutive year. Their triumph in the Raja Sungai 30 Men Paddlers category earned them a grand prize of RM30,000 and the prestigious Head of State Trophy. First and second runners-up, Landas Azam Kasihnya Warisan I and Udak, received RM20,000 and RM10,000, respectively, along with trophies.
Apart from the adrenaline-filled races, the Kuching Waterfront Festival offered a vibrant lineup of activities, from traditional music and dance performances to an array of local food stalls. Families and visitors enjoyed the diverse offerings, including artisanal crafts and interactive games for children, adding a festive charm to the riverside celebration.
As the day drew to a close, the awards ceremony brought cheers and applause, with winners receiving their trophies from the distinguished guests.
