KUCHING — Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, has once again highlighted aluminium’s big role in the state’s industrial future. Speaking at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) and Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Berhad at Raia Hotel & Convention Centre, Kuching, he explained how Sarawak can become a leader in aluminium production while supporting sustainable growth.

Abang Johari gave special praise to Press Metal for their success in the aluminium industry. He noted that Sarawak has a natural advantage because of its renewable energy sources, which provide the power needed for aluminium production.

He explained that there are two important factors for successful aluminium production — heat and energy supply, and recycling and sustainability. Sarawak’s clean energy from hydropower is perfect for producing aluminium, while aluminium’s ability to be recycled again and again makes it a top choice for green industries.

He also highlighted aluminium’s role in producing solar panel frames, which are crucial for renewable energy projects. These frames can also be used for floating solar farms and even as building materials.

Abang Johari introduced the idea of Building Information Modelling (BIM) — a smart construction method where solar panels can be placed efficiently on roofs, walls, or even as decorative parts of buildings. Aluminium frames are key for this innovation.

One strong point about aluminium is that it melts at a lower temperature than steel or iron. This helps to save energy and lower production costs. “The higher the melting point, the more heat you need, and the more you pay for electricity. Aluminium is cheaper to produce because of this,” he said.

He also pointed out that old aluminium panels can be recycled into new products, including parts for aircraft and other industrial uses. This makes aluminium even more valuable in today’s circular economy.

At the ceremony, Abang Johari was joined by important state leaders, including Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian, State Secretary Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar Bin Marzuki, Press Metal Group CEO Tan Sri Dato’ Koon Poh Keong, and BDA leaders Dato Haidar Khan Bin Asghar Khan and Datu Haji Muhamad Yakup Bin Kari.

The Premier ended by encouraging industry players to explore more opportunities in the aluminium sector. “The opportunities are there. It’s up to you to grab them,” he said. – Sarawakku
