Major Decision for 2027 SEA Games Announced
KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 29) — In a landmark decision, Malaysia has confirmed its commitment to host the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, with a significant contribution from Sarawak. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh revealed that Sarawak will shoulder 50% of the total organizing costs, estimated at RM700 million. This announcement follows the agreement of three states—Sarawak, Sabah, and Penang—to co-host the prestigious sporting event alongside Kuala Lumpur.
Cost Breakdown and Contributions
The estimated cost for organizing the 2027 SEA Games is based on the expenditure incurred during the 2017 SEA Games. According to Yeoh, the substantial financial commitment by the states involved has eased the federal government’s burden. “Sarawak has agreed to cover RM300 million, which represents half of the total estimated cost,” Yeoh disclosed.
Sabah will contribute RM100 million, while Penang’s share amounts to RM15 million. The remaining costs will be distributed according to the needs and logistics of the event. This collaborative effort is set to significantly alleviate the financial pressure on the federal government.
Federal Government’s Support and Cabinet Decision
The decision to accept the offer from the SEA Sports Federation (SEAGF) to host the 2027 SEA Games was endorsed by the Malaysian Cabinet. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim chaired the meeting where the hosting proposal was approved. The Cabinet’s support reflects the commitment to leveraging state resources and partnerships to manage the event’s financial demands effectively.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh emphasized that the federal government’s reduced financial responsibility was made possible due to the substantial contributions from Sarawak, Sabah, and Penang. “The allocation from the state governments means that the federal government’s financial burden will be minimal, allowing us to move forward with confidence,” Yeoh stated.
Response from Other States and Future Plans
While Sarawak, Sabah, and Penang have confirmed their contributions, several other states expressed interest in participating as co-organizers. However, their offers were declined due to their inability to commit to sharing the costs. Yeoh mentioned that invitations were extended to other states, but only those willing to contribute financially were considered.
“We have received interest from various states; however, their willingness to share the cost was not sufficient. Only the three states that committed to financial contributions were included in the co-hosting agreement,” Yeoh explained.
Impact on Malaysian Sports and Community Engagement
The involvement of Sarawak, Sabah, and Penang in hosting the SEA Games highlights the growing role of regional states in national sporting events. This collaborative approach is expected to enhance the overall organization and success of the games. The contributions from these states are not only a financial commitment but also a testament to their dedication to promoting sports and community engagement across Malaysia.
The 2027 SEA Games is anticipated to be a landmark event, showcasing Malaysia’s ability to host major international sporting events. The joint efforts of the federal and state governments will ensure that the games are a success, reflecting positively on Malaysia’s capacity to manage large-scale events.
