KUCHING: Nine vibrant southern lions of the Chinese Martial Art Association (CMAA) were ceremoniously “awakened” today at the Tua Pek Kong Temple through the traditional eye-dotting ritual. This symbolic ceremony heralds the forthcoming Chinese New Year, ushering in the Year of the Wood Snake on January 29.
The event, accompanied by the resonant beats of drums, cymbals, and gongs, was graced by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Hui Hian, CMAA president Chester Lim, and advisors Kapitan Tan Kun Gee and Frank Kong. Using red ink and calligraphy brushes, the dignitaries dotted the lions’ eyes, noses, ears, and mouths, infusing them with life and spirit.
Following the unveiling, prayers were offered at the temple, seeking blessings for a prosperous and successful year ahead.
Dr Sim highlighted the cultural significance of the lion dance during the festive season, stating, “In Sarawak, lion dances are an integral part of Chinese New Year, spreading prosperity and goodwill across communities.”
This year’s ceremony also marked CMAA’s 51st anniversary, adding a touch of nostalgia and pride to the occasion. CMAA president Chester Lim shed light on the deeper meaning behind the lion dance, describing it as a blend of cultural artistry and historical heritage.
“The lions represent legendary figures from the Three Kingdoms era, each symbolising virtues such as loyalty, bravery, and kindness. Their colours hold specific meanings—yellow for Liu Bei’s kindness, black for Zhang Fei’s courage, and red for Guan Yu’s unwavering loyalty,” Lim explained.
Beyond its symbolism, the lion dance imparts life skills like discipline, teamwork, and perseverance to its practitioners. “It’s about more than just performance. It’s about building unity and instilling noble values,” Lim added.
He also expressed gratitude for the state government’s efforts in preserving this cultural treasure.
As the Year of the Wood Snake approaches, these majestic lions stand ready to bring joy, hope, and blessings to communities throughout Sarawak.
