KUCHING (Dec 23): The newly built St Peter’s Catholic Church in Padungan is set to host its first service during the Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, marking a significant milestone for the Catholic community.
Rector Rev Vincent Chin expressed his excitement, saying, “I am delighted to welcome everyone to our newly completed church as we celebrate the joyous occasion of the Birth of our Lord Jesus Christ this Christmas.”
Christmas Eve Celebrations
The Christmas Eve celebration will begin with carolling at 11pm, followed by the Midnight Mass and a soft launch of the church at midnight. On Christmas Day, a morning Mass will take place at 7.30am, with an evening Mass scheduled for 5.30pm.
Rev Chin urged the public to participate in this memorable event and highlighted the importance of building a strong, faith-filled community.
Traffic Management and Parking
To ensure smooth traffic flow, Rela personnel will be on duty during the celebrations. The church’s parking facility, accommodating 308 vehicles, will close once full. Visitors are advised to use alternative parking spaces at nearby locations, including the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Chung Hua Primary School No. 3, and the Yun Phin building.
Future Plans
The church’s official consecration is planned for June 29, 2025, during the Feast Day of Saints Peter and Paul. Additionally, St Peter’s Church has been designated as one of the Pilgrimage Centres in the Archdiocese of Kuching for the Holy Year 2025, as declared by Pope Francis.
Donation Appeal
Rev Chin emphasized that the church requires an additional RM8 million to cover the building costs. Donations can be made to the St Peter’s Development Fund Account 2 (Maybank Account Number: 511038632278).
“Together, with your generosity, we can complete this project and ensure a brighter future for our community,” he added.
