KOTA KINABALU (Sept 12) – In an unexpected turn of events, Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) has ordered the immediate closure of Perdana Park Tanjung Aru after a frightening otter attack left three joggers injured on Wednesday morning. The shocking incident, which occurred at one of the city’s popular recreational spots, has raised concerns about public safety, prompting urgent action from local authorities.
DBKK’s Swift Response to Otter Attack
Following the incident, DBKK announced via Facebook that a notice had been issued to the operators of Perdana Park Tanjung Aru, demanding an immediate cessation of all park operations. According to DBKK, the park’s closure is crucial to protect visitors and allow authorities to conduct a thorough investigation in collaboration with relevant agencies.
Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah stated, “DBKK is treating this incident with utmost seriousness. The park’s closure is a necessary step to prevent any further incidents and to ensure the safety of all visitors.”
He also urged the public to adhere strictly to the closure order, emphasising that the park would only reopen once it is deemed safe.
Details of the Otter Attack: Three Joggers Injured
The otter attack, which took place around 6.40 am, involved a group of joggers who were ambushed by a romp of otters. According to Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP Kasim Muda, the victims—a 40-year-old woman, a 54-year-old woman, and a 56-year-old man—were jogging when the otters suddenly attacked from behind.
“The attack left all three victims with injuries to their legs, arms, and heads from bites and scratches,” Kasim said in a statement.
The injured individuals were immediately treated for their wounds, but the shocking nature of the attack has left the community on edge. Although the injuries were not life-threatening, the incident has underscored the unpredictability of wildlife encounters even in seemingly safe, urban environments.
Safety Concerns: What Led to the Otter Aggression?
Wildlife experts speculate that the otters might have felt threatened or were protecting their young, leading to the unusual aggression. However, exact reasons for the otters’ behaviour remain unclear and will be part of the ongoing investigations.
The incident has prompted DBKK to review existing safety measures at the park, which is known for its serene environment and picturesque jogging paths. In addition to fencing and signage, enhanced surveillance of wildlife activity within the park is likely to be part of the new safety protocols once operations resume.
Community Reaction and DBKK’s Future Safety Plans
The otter attack has stirred significant concern among Kota Kinabalu residents, many of whom frequent Perdana Park for exercise and leisure. Residents are now urging authorities to take more proactive measures to ensure the safety of public spaces, especially where wildlife is present.
Local resident and frequent park-goer, Amir Hassan, expressed his shock at the incident. “I’ve always enjoyed jogging at Perdana Park, but this attack has made me rethink outdoor activities. I hope DBKK will implement stricter safety measures to protect visitors,” he said.
DBKK has assured the public that the safety of residents and visitors remains their top priority. “We will work closely with wildlife experts and relevant agencies to understand what led to this incident and how we can prevent such occurrences in the future,” said Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah.
Authorities Await Official Reports as Investigations Continue
Despite the severity of the attack, police confirmed that they had yet to receive any official reports from the victims as of yesterday. Authorities are encouraging anyone involved to come forward to assist with the investigation.
DBKK has pledged to provide regular updates to the public as they work to resolve the situation. Until then, Perdana Park will remain closed, and authorities are advising residents to be cautious when visiting other parks and recreational areas within Kota Kinabalu.
