BAU, SARAWAK: Heavy rainfall last night (Jan 21) caused flash floods in three villages in Bau, forcing 155 residents from 38 families to seek temporary refuge at Dewan Kampung Tringgus Bong. The affected villages included Kampung Tringgus Matan Nguan, Kampung Tringgus Rabak Rotan, and Kampung Tringgus Bong, which experienced floodwaters rising up to one foot deep.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) responded promptly to a distress call received at 7.15 pm. Firefighters from the Bau station were deployed to the scene, located about 20 km away. Though no official temporary relief centre (PPS) was set up, the affected families took shelter in the community hall before returning to their homes once the floodwaters receded.

The Bomba team closely monitored the situation and concluded their operations at 10.30 pm after ensuring the villagers’ safety.

In a separate incident in Kuching, heavy rain also triggered flash floods in the low-lying area of Lorong 6, Siol Kandis. A distress call was received at 10.59 pm, prompting the Petra Jaya firefighters to carry out safety patrols and monitor flood conditions. Floodwaters rose to waist level, but no evacuation was necessary as residents had already relocated to higher ground as a precautionary measure.

The flood situation in both locations improved after the rain subsided, and residents returned home safely. The exact number of houses affected in Siol Kandis has yet to be confirmed.

Authorities continue to urge residents in flood-prone areas to stay vigilant during the current rainy season and to take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
