SIBU (Jan 11): The Sarawak government has announced an allocation of RM826 million for 17 road projects in Sibu, signifying a major step in the state’s infrastructure development. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas shared this during the earthbreaking ceremony for the Jalan Teku Pasai Siong-Kemuyang Road project, officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“Infrastructure is fundamental for Sarawak’s development. Our Premier’s vision focuses heavily on enhancing infrastructure throughout the state,” Uggah stated.
Among the notable developments, the RM89-million Jalan Teku Pasai Siong-Jalan Kemuyang project will feature Sarawak’s first-ever 700m elevated road, addressing the region’s challenging terrain. Uggah noted that Sibu roads, including those from the airport to the town, often require technological upgrades to ensure a smoother travel experience.
The Sarawak government has also prioritized key infrastructure such as the second trunk road, the coastal road, and major bridges. The Muara Lassa Bridge marks a significant milestone in this journey. By early 2026, the state envisions a ferry-free drive from Kuching to Miri, thanks to the planned bridge completions.
Funding for these ambitious projects stems from innovative financial strategies by Premier Abang Johari. “The Premier’s foresight in creating alternative funding sources has enabled us to achieve these goals,” Uggah added.
Looking ahead, Sarawak plans to embrace advanced technologies to revolutionize infrastructure development. Programs are in the pipeline for the Premier to explore cost-efficient international construction methods, potentially reducing project expenses by half.
Additionally, the government is implementing Building Industry Modelling to enhance project management, ensuring timely and efficient project execution.
With these initiatives, the Sarawak government reaffirms its commitment to transforming infrastructure, paving the way for a more connected and prosperous state.
