KUCHING (March 19): The What About Kuching (WAK) Festival 2025 is back, inviting creative talents from Malaysia, Brunei, Kalimantan (Indonesia), Singapore, and beyond to be part of this community-driven arts festival. The festival has launched its Call for Proposal (CFP), encouraging individuals, groups, and organisations to submit event ideas.

This year, WAK 2025 carries the theme ‘Roots’, focusing on grassroots engagement across different artistic fields. The festival will feature open-mic performances, visual arts, handicrafts, cultural heritage displays, and lifestyle-driven activities. The CFP launch event was held at Bangunan Baitulmakmur II, officiated by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, with Deputy Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting also present.

For the first time, the festival will take place in three different locations in Sarawak. WAK Sibu will be held from June 6-8, followed by WAK Miri on June 13-15, and WAK Kuching throughout October. The organisers are now accepting proposals across various genres, including music and performing arts, visual arts and exhibitions, literature, spoken word, film, digital media, culinary arts, sports, wellness activities, workshops, and interactive installations.

Those interested can submit their proposals through the official website www.aboutkuching.com. The deadline is May 8 for WAK Sibu and WAK Miri, while WAK Kuching submissions close on June 27. The final festival calendar will be revealed on May 22 for WAK Sibu, May 23 for WAK Miri, and August 8 for WAK Kuching.

Minister Abdul Karim encouraged artists and visitors to take part, saying that Sarawak, with its diverse cultural heritage of over 30 ethnic groups, is the perfect place to showcase creativity. He invited everyone to celebrate the arts, culture, and lifestyles of Sarawak through WAK 2025.
