KUCHING – On the evening of July 6, the Masjid Jamek mosque in Kuching became the focal point for a significant spiritual gathering as Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and other state leaders joined the Muslim community for the Maal Hijrah celebration. This annual event marks the Islamic New Year, bringing together believers to reflect on the past year and seek blessings for the year ahead.

The evening’s proceedings began with the recitation of the end-of-the-year and beginning-of-the-year prayers, led by the Sarawak Chief Imam, Datuk Mustapha Kamal Ahmad Fauzi. Spiritual Enlightenment and Environmental Awareness

Following the Maghrib prayer, the congregation engaged in the recitation of Yassin, a practice aimed at seeking divine guidance and protection. The highlight of the evening was a sermon titled “Environmental Sustainability According to Islam,” delivered by the Sarawak Mufti, Datuk Kipli Yassin. This timely sermon underscored the importance of environmental stewardship, drawing connections between Islamic teachings and the imperative to protect and sustain the natural world.

Premier Abang Johari’s arrival at Masjid Jamek at approximately 6:20 PM was marked by a warm reception from the Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication (Utility), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi. The Premier was also accompanied by an esteemed assembly of dignitaries, including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Sarawak Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Datu Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, Sarawak Islamic Council (SIC) President Datuk Misnu Taha, and the Director of the Department of Islamic Religion Sarawak, Ustaz Mual Suaud.
