KUCHING (Dec 6): Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) is gearing up to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) market in Malaysia by producing 500 units of its eMO-II EV monthly, starting next year. The eMO-II is set to become Malaysia’s most affordable EV, priced between RM50,000 and RM90,000.

Perodua President and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad unveiled the eMO-II prototype at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show 2024 (KLIMS 2024), expressing optimism about the company’s mission to deliver cost-effective and competitive EVs.

EV Charging Infrastructure in the Works

Speaking to the media, Zainal revealed plans to establish a robust EV charging network, with stations placed every 40 to 50 kilometers. These chargers could be either fixed permanent units or mobile solutions, as Perodua continues studying the best approach.

Zainal emphasized the importance of retaining the EV’s second-hand value, stating, “We aim to ensure that the eMO-II holds its resale value, which is vital for the long-term success of our EV initiative.”

Outpacing Competitors in Price

Zainal highlighted that Perodua’s eMO-II would likely hold the title of Malaysia’s most affordable EV, even as competitors face challenges in offering lower prices without sacrificing quality. “By the first quarter of 2025, other EV makers will struggle to compete with our price point without compromising on key features,” he noted.

A Homegrown Innovation

The eMO-II is the result of Perodua’s in-house research and development efforts in 2023. This prototype, an improved version of its predecessor, boasts better styling and advanced features. Zainal assured that additional enhancements will be introduced before the final product hits the market.

This move aligns with the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry’s (MITI) vision to support Perodua in producing Malaysia’s first sub-RM100,000 EV. Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz expressed confidence in Perodua’s ability to achieve this milestone by the end of 2025.
